Private reef building is only legal in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Customers that want a reef deployed in those areas can pick out a reef model he or she would like to deploy. Choose a location within the permitted area. If you aren't sure about about the location, call David (251-979-2200). Once you have decided on a location, fax or e-mail the order to David. Include your name, billing address, phone numbers, number of reefs and locations.
Your reef order will be placed on the next available trip going to that area. You may ride on the MARANATHA during deployment if you wish. There are some rules to follow to ensure the secrecy of other customer's reefs. The trips are long 24 hours+ and the sailing date will be short notice.
If you don't go (most don't), we deploy your reef in secrecy (we have our ways). The locations are recorded by a picture of a Northstar GPS and a Fruno Loran at the time of release of your reef. After the reef is deployed, I will send you an invoice. Once the invoice is paid, I will send you the pictures certified mail and destroy/erase any copies.
Reefs are guaranteed to be there. If you can't find your reef, call me and I'll look for it, if I can't find it, I'll replace it free. Reef numbers are precious to fishermen and you may wonder if yours are safe with me. If you have questions, feel free to ask, you won't offend me. I want you to feel confident you have the only set of coordinates in existence. If you still have doubts go to the Orange Beach Fishing Association's website http://www.gulffishing.net/ and call any charter boat captain and inquire about the reefmaker's reputation. There is a link on my home page.
For those of you from other geographical areas that have never heard of private reef building, it started here in Alabama in 1986. Fishermen worked with the Alabama Department of Conservation and the US Army Corps of Engineers to establish a 1200 square mile artificial reef zone. Anyone wanting to build an artificial reef can get the material inspected and if approved deploy it the next day. The exact location can be kept secret by the deployer and he or she does not own it, but can fish it legally in secrecy. In 1986 Alabama caught almost zero Red Snapper and today Alabama's artificial reef zone is responsible for over 40% of all the Red Snapper caught in the Gulf of Mexico. Not bad considering Alabama only has 1.5% of the coastline. All due to private artificial reefs.
